RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is taking concrete steps to bridge the digital divide in one of its outermost regions, Miangas Island in Talaud Regency, North Sulawesi, by providing stronger internet connectivity and communication services.
The initiative includes the distribution of Starlink devices, mobile phones, and upgraded telecommunications signals, ensuring residents in this border area gain better access to digital services.
According to the Ministry of Communication and Digital, the program was launched during a working visit by President Prabowo Subianto, accompanied by Minister Meutya Hafid, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
The support targets 203 households, each set to receive one Starlink modem and one mobile phone, alongside improved signal coverage facilitated by BAKTI Komdigi and Telkomsel, Antara reported.
In total, the government has prepared 180 Starlink modems and 210 mobile phones. The modems were flown from Jakarta to Manado using several aircraft, including Boeing 7308, Falcon 0707, Falcon 0801, and PK CAA. From Manado, the devices will be transported to Miangas with coordination from the Cabinet Secretariat, using a CN aircraft.
Beyond hardware distribution, authorities are also enhancing signal quality by installing additional Base Transceiver Station (BTS) equipment, sent from Manado via chartered aircraft.
With stronger connectivity, Miangas residents are expected to benefit from easier communication, improved access to public services, participation in education, support for local economic activities, and faster access to information.
Officials emphasized that the program is part of Indonesia’s broader effort to ensure equal digital access across remote and border regions, addressing long-standing gaps in telecommunications infrastructure. ***
