RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is spearheading a global movement to overhaul the livestock industry, positioning scientific innovation as the primary solution to food security and environmental pressures. At an international strategic meeting in Jakarta on Friday, March 27, 2026, officials emphasized that traditional farming must evolve into a data-driven, sustainable sector to meet the nutritional demands of a growing global population.

Addressing delegates at the BRIN office, Chairperson Arif Satria highlighted the urgency of this transition as the world grapples with a perfect storm of climate change and resource scarcity.

"Global society is currently facing a series of interrelated and increasingly complex challenges. These issues include a surge in food demand, nutritional gaps, as well as climate change pressures and resource limitations," said Arif during the opening of the ‘International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation.'

To navigate these hurdles, BRIN is advocating for a deep transformation of the agrifood value chain. This scientific roadmap includes the advancement of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to inform policy, the implementation of digital livestock systems, and the creation of integrated supply chains that bridge the gap between upstream production and downstream markets.

"At BRIN, we firmly believe that science must be at the center of this transformation," added Arif, as quoted by Antara.

The initiative is being bolstered by a close partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Together, the organizations aim to advance a global scientific network and develop standardized methodologies for assessing the environmental performance of livestock systems.

This collaboration focuses on three strategic pillars, including strengthening data-driven innovation and accelerating agrifood system integration to prevent fragmented sustainability efforts. Furthermore, it encourages joint investment among various stakeholders to ensure long-term impact.

As a concrete follow-up to the summit, BRIN announced the immediate formation of a specialized task force under the Deputy for Development Policy. This team will be responsible for translating scientific findings into actionable national and international strategies.
