RRI.CO.ID, Bandung – Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing an air mattress system to assist patients on bed rest or bedridden conditions. The agency stated on Thursday, 29 January 2026, that it is part of intelligent mechatronic technology developments to meet public needs.

Researcher of BRIN's Intelligent Mechatronics Research Center (PRMC), Bahrudin, said bed rest requires lying down to recover. Meanwhile, being bedridden makes someone unable to move and must lie down for a long period of time.

This condition risks causing various health problems if not addressed with adequate technological support. Through an integrated research approach, technology is designed not only to focus on machines but also to improve and facilitate the quality of human life.

The mattress works by creating space by adding or removing air, making it easier for hands or clothing to fit between the body and the mattress without the patient having to move their body. Its maximum capacity can accommodate patients weighing 80-90 kilograms, and it is already patented.

"The development of this air mattress is intended to assist nurses and caregivers of bedridden patients. It also improves patient comfort, as they must lie down for extended periods, even permanently," Bahrudin conveyed at a BRIN campus in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.

The biomechatronics research group within BRIN is currently developing strategic research projects focused on technologies to support human activities and needs. Besides air mattresses, PRMC also developed other care support devices, such as dressing aids, dry bathing, and one- and two-dimensional air mattresses.

"Intelligent mechatronics research integrates mechanical, electronic, and intelligent control systems, delivering adaptive and applicable technology tailored to field needs," he said.

BRIN said their research and innovation are not only developing advanced technology but also addressing real-world problems. By developing intelligent mechatronics research, the agency claimed it affirms its commitment to delivering science and technology-based innovations and solutions that improve the quality of daily life across various sectors.
