IPB Develops Fastrex, an Agricultural Machinery Innovation

RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - IPB University innovators continue developing agricultural machinery tailored to Indonesia’s diverse farming conditions. IPB University's machine engineering expert, Professor Desrial, leads these efforts as an agricultural machinery engineering expert at IPB University.

For oil palm plantations, he designed a fresh fruit bunch transporter named Fastrex. The vehicle suits Indonesia’s varied terrain and soil characteristics across palm plantation areas.

“Fastrex improves harvest transport efficiency, reduces manual labor burdens, and boosts plantation productivity,” Professor Desrial stated on IPB University's release on Tuesday, 27 January 2026. Its daily capacity reaches ten to fifteen tons, equivalent to several workers using manual carts.

The Fastrex innovation has been successfully commercialized, demonstrating effective downstreaming of agricultural engineering research. This achievement supports national agricultural machinery industries through locally developed and applied technology.

Professor Desrial also developed smart tractors and precision automation technologies using navigation systems. These systems enable precise operations, efficient input usage, and reduced reliance on highly skilled operators.

He stated these innovations form an essential foundation toward digital and intelligent agriculture implementation. Such technologies support long-term transformation of Indonesia’s agricultural productivity and management systems.

Globally, China leads agricultural machinery production, while the United States dominates technological advancement. In Asia, India ranks third globally, driven by massive domestic demand and production scale.

Despite vast agricultural potential, Indonesia still relies heavily on imported agricultural machinery components. He emphasized strengthening industrial ecosystems, supportive policies, and collaboration to empower local manufacturers.
