KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is promoting the use of nuclear technology as a crucial solution in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods in the Indonesian industry.

The application of this technology enhances the efficiency and accuracy of testing without damaging objects, thereby ensuring the quality of national products.

The Head of the Nuclear Energy Research Organization at BRIN, Syaiful Bakhri, said that NDT is one of the applications of nuclear technology that has been widely known long before the existence of nuclear power plants.

“NDT technology has been used in various sectors and continues to evolve,” he said in a talk show at the Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo (InaRI Expo) 2025, at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo), on October 30, as quoted by brin.go.id on Friday, October 30, 2025.

NDT technology utilizes radiation to penetrate materials, producing high-precision internal images. Through this technology, various crucial components, such as pipes, metals, engines, and constructions, can be thoroughly inspected without having to be dismantled or cut.

This method is considered crucial for the energy, oil, and gas, as well as manufacturing sectors, to ensure product quality. BRIN continues to strengthen NDT technology research and innovation, thereby establishing it as a competitive national competency.

According to Syaiful, BRIN is committed to strengthening national NDT innovation and capabilities to support an increasingly advanced and independent industry. “With further development, there will be more collaborations, research, and new applications that we can develop together,” he said.

“NDT technology should be a key technology for us, not only for BRIN, but also for industry, universities, and the community,” Syaiful added. One of the academic partners actively collaborating with BRIN in NDT research is the Faculty of Earth and Energy Technology (FTKE) at Trisakti University.

FTKE lecturer Rini Setiati explained that NDT has a significant role in understanding the characteristics of reservoir rocks in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) research.

“For example, when injecting fluid to change the properties of oil in the formation, we use neutron tomography to view the internal condition of the sample non-invasively,” explained Rini.

Head of the BRIN Nuclear Beam Analysis Technology Research Center (PRTABN), Abu Khalid Rivai, emphasized that NDT technology also makes a strategic contribution to the petroleum and energy sectors. “NDT technology is key to ensuring operational safety and efficiency,” said Abu.

Abu Rivai also emphasized the need for cooperation between BRIN, industry, and universities to strengthen research. This collaboration is expected to strengthen national capacity and produce excellent human resources in nuclear technology-based materials.

Through a growing innovation ecosystem, BRIN aims to create tangible benefits of nuclear technology for the Indonesian industry, strengthen national competitiveness, and promote technological independence in the future. ***
