RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia won the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup after defeating Thailand in a penalty shootout on Monday, October 5, 2026. The final was held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, with Indonesia winning 4-2 on penalties.

Indonesia and Thailand were level 1-1 after 90 minutes, following goals from Dean James and Sanron Iklas. The match continued into extra time, with both teams creating chances despite signs of fatigue.

Thailand moved ahead in the 110th minute through Peeradol Chamrasamee after a quick counterattack. Indonesia responded six minutes later, as Elkan Baggott converted Rizky Ridho's cross to make it 2-2.

Neither side could find another goal before the final whistle, sending the match into a penalty shootout. Indonesia converted all four attempts, while Thailand missed two through Sarach Yooyen and Nattapong Sayriya.

Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott, and Shayne Pattynama successfully scored for Indonesia during the shootout. Thailand scored through Manuel Bihr and Waris Choolthong, but their two misses handed Indonesia the victory.

The result secured Indonesia's first championship title in the inaugural edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. The victory also marked Indonesia's first title at the Southeast Asian level.

Indonesia's achievement ended a long wait for the Garuda squad to claim the region's highest football trophy. The team had previously been unable to win when reaching the final of Southeast Asia's major competition.

The historic victory also gave Indonesia a major achievement on home soil in front of its supporters. Kevin Diks and his teammates finally broke the team's previous record of finishing as runners-up in the final.
