RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the triumph of men’s doubles shuttlers Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, calling their achievement a pivotal moment in the nation’s pursuit of four gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

“Alhamdulillah, this is Indonesia’s third gold medal at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. Our men’s doubles pair, Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, delivered glory for the Red-and-White after defeating China in the final,” Erick said, as quoted by Antara.

The victory carries historic weight for Indonesian badminton, marking the return of the men’s doubles gold at the Asian Games, last won in 2018 by Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.

“This win restores Indonesia’s dominance in men’s doubles after eight years. Congratulations and thank you for your hard work. This is a proud achievement for Indonesia,” he noted.

Badminton’s success now accounts for two gold medals, surpassing the initial target agreed upon by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Indonesian Olympic Committee, and federation officials. Originally tasked with securing one gold, the sport has delivered victories in both the men’s team and men’s doubles events.

“I extend my appreciation and gratitude to the entire badminton team. The target was one gold, but today badminton has already contributed two. This is the result of commitment, hard work, and serious preparation by athletes, coaches, officials, and the federation,” Erick emphasized.

Beyond badminton, Erick also praised the weightlifting team for meeting its target of one gold medal. “This shows that the targets set can serve as motivation and guidance for all athletes to give their best for Indonesia,” he said.

The minister stressed that Indonesia’s campaign is far from over, with several sports still in contention for gold. “We are waiting for other disciplines that also promise medals. Every sport must uphold its commitment to the targets we agreed upon,” Erick remarked.

He urged athletes to stay focused and draw inspiration from the success of Leo/Daniel and other medal winners. “We now have three golds. Just one more to reach our target of four. Let these victories fuel the spirit of our athletes still competing,” Erick said.

“We will stand together until the final match. Hopefully, the next gold will come soon and we can achieve our four-gold target,” he concluded. ***
