Erick Thohir Praises Indonesia's Asian Games Opening Parade

RRI.CO.ID, Nagoya - Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir praised the Indonesian contingent’s appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya, Japan, Saturday, September 19, 2026.

Erick said he was proud to see Indonesian athletes and officials take part in the parade while carrying the national flag and showcasing Indonesia’s identity and rich cultural heritage on the international stage.

“Alhamdulillah, tonight we have witnessed the opening of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games together. I am proud to see the Indonesian contingent taking part in the parade with the national flag and showcasing Indonesia’s identity and cultural heritage,” Erick said.

Erick also expressed his appreciation to everyone who had worked to prepare the Indonesian contingent for Asia’s biggest sporting event, including the athletes, coaches, officials, Chef de Mission, sports federations, and supporting teams.

“My appreciation goes to the athletes who continue to fight, as well as the coaches, officials, Chef de Mission, sports federation officials, and all the teams who have made thorough preparations to bring honor to the nation,” he explained.

Erick further urged all athletes to maintain their fighting spirit and uphold Indonesia’s dignity throughout the competition. He said the Asian Games provide an opportunity for Indonesian athletes to demonstrate the country’s capabilities on the international stage.

“I remind the athletes that you are not only here to represent yourselves or your respective sports, but also to represent Indonesia and demonstrate the strength of our nation,” The Minister stated.

At the opening ceremony, the Indonesian contingent also showcased the country’s diverse cultural heritage. Women’s basketball player Dewa Ayu Made Sriartha Kusuma Dewi carried the national flag while wearing traditional Balinese attire, while karateka Daniel Hutapea joined the front row wearing traditional Batak clothing and a Batak ulos draped over his shoulder.
