RRI.CO.ID, Bogor – Indonesia is using the CMAS Asian Underwater Hockey Championship 2026 as a platform to raise awareness and expand the reach of the sport nationally.
The event, held at the Main Pool of Seruni Hotel in Cisarua, Bogor Regency, West Java, from August 5–8, brought together 276 athletes from seven countries, including Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
Chair of the Indonesian Subaquatic Sport Association (PB POSSI), Police Com. Gen. Makhruzi Rahman, emphasized that the championship is more than just competition -- it is a chance to introduce underwater hockey to a wider audience.
“PB POSSI is committed to developing this sport as one that can deliver achievements that make the nation proud,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Indonesia fielded teams across multiple categories, including Cucut Underwater Hockey and Bhineka Stars in U-19, as well as Searia and Cucut in U-15. Elite men’s teams came from Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and Singapore, while elite women’s teams featured Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Makhruzi expressed gratitude to the World Underwater Federation (CMAS) for entrusting Indonesia with hosting duties. He also urged organizers to ensure the competition met international standards. “We want every delegate and participant to experience a safe, professional, and world-class competition,” he concluded.
The championship highlights Indonesia’s ambition to grow underwater hockey from a niche sport into a recognized discipline, inspiring more athletes to take part and strengthening the country’s presence in Asian competitions. It also reflects PB POSSI’s broader mission to align sport development with community engagement, international recognition, and athlete development. ***
