RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian para athletics team achieved an impressive feat at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 in Tlaxcala, Mexico, which took place from July 21–24, 2026. The Red and White contingent successfully brought home 16 medals, consisting of 15 gold medals and one silver medal, while also setting a world record and an Asian record.

The result placed Indonesia in the runner-up position in the final standings. Indonesia was only behind the host country Mexico, which sent hundreds of athletes and collected 99 gold medals, 101 silver medals, and 81 bronze medals.

One of Indonesia's greatest achievements was accomplished by I Kadek Dwi Purwana Yasa, who broke the world record in the F57 classification discus throw. Kadek recorded a throw of 48.68 meters, surpassing the previous record held by Brazilian athlete Thiago Paulino dos Santos, who had a throw of 48.55 meters.

The coach of Indonesian para athletics, Setyo Budi Hartanto, appreciated the performance of all the athletes in the championship attended by participants from 26 countries. According to him, the results achieved are proof of the effectiveness of the long-term national training center (pelatnas) program.

"The results are very satisfying. There was a world record broken by Kadek Dwi in the F57 discus throw and an Asian record broken by Nanda Sholihah in the T47 100 meters," Setyo Budi Hartanto said, quoted in a press release on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

In addition to Kadek, Nanda Mei Sholihah also shone brightly by breaking the Asian record in the 100-meter race, T47 classification. Nanda contributed three gold medals, each from two individual events and one relay event.

Similar achievements were also recorded by Karisma Evi Tiarani and Taufik Abdul Karim, who each contributed two gold medals from individual events.

Meanwhile, other gold medals were awarded to Ni Made Arianti Putri, Saptoyogo Purnomo, Jaenal Aripin, Alfin Nomleni, Partin, Fauzi Purwolaksono, I Kadek Dwi Purwana Yasa, and Suparni Yati. The only silver medal for Indonesia was won by Jaenal Aripin.

Setyo Budi considers the championship in Mexico to be of great significance for the team's preparation for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan. Besides being the final warm-up event, the competition also provides an opportunity for athletes to gather qualification points for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics.

"The timing is just perfect. We still have three months until the Asian Para Games. We will further develop it so that the athletes' performance peaks in Nagoya later," he said.
