RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian para-athletics contingent achieved an impressive feat at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 in Mexico. In addition to successfully bringing home 16 medals, Indonesia also set one world record and one Asian record thru the outstanding performances of I Kadek Dwi Purwana Yasa and Nanda Mei Sholihah.

I Kadek Dwi Purwana Yasa broke the world record in the F57 classification discus throw with a throw of 48.68 meters. This record surpassed the previous world record held by Brazilian athlete Thiago Paulino dos Santos, who recorded a throw of 48.55 meters.

Kadek admitted that he did not expect to break the world record. According to him, he was just trying to give his best performance during the competition.

"Actually, I didn't expect to break the record. I just tried to throw as best as I could, but it turned out that from that throw, I broke the record here." "Of course, I am happy and still don't expect it," Kadek said in a written statement on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Before the match, Kadek admitted to facing several obstacles, from the long journey from Indonesia to Mexico to the difference in food that did not suit his taste. However, these obstacles were overcome by increasing rest time and bringing food supplies from Indonesia.

"The first challenge can be solved by getting plenty of rest. For the second, we brought food supplies from Indonesia." So, we can overcome those two obstacles," she explained.

Meanwhile, Indonesian sprinter Nanda Mei Sholihah also achieved an impressive feat by breaking the Asian record in the 100-meter race for T45/46/47 classification. She also recorded her personal best in the 200-meter event.

Nanda said the biggest challenge he faced did not come from opponents on the track, but rather from himself. "Actually, the toughest opponent is oneself because it's a battle against fear. But with sufficient preparation, Alhamdulillah, everything went as expected," Nanda said.

That achievement becomes an important asset for Nanda in facing the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan. At that event, he will compete in three events: the 100 meters, 200 meters, and relay.
