RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's long-term investment in youth sport climbing produced another encouraging result after Haddan Malik Baqmuhyibar secured a silver medal in the men's U19 speed event at the IFSC World Climbing Youth Championship in Arco, Italy, on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
The achievement underlines the progress of Indonesia's athlete development program, with international competitions serving as an important platform to prepare young climbers for future elite tournaments.
Haddan finished second after narrowly losing to China's Yanze Shi in the final, clocking 6.21 seconds, while Shi won the gold medal with a time of 6.07 seconds.
National lead climbing coach Amri, who accompanied Haddan during the championship, praised the athlete's performance despite falling short of the title. "Haddan gave his maximum effort. We still have plenty of time to continue improving his performance," Amri said on Wednesday, July 22, as quoted by Antara.
The bronze medal went to Switzerland's Gilles Meili, who defeated China's Ruifeng Wang after Wang fell during the race.
The Indonesian Sport Climbing Association (FPTI) sent two young athletes to compete at the championship, held from July 18-25, 2026. Besides Haddan, Ardana Cikal Damarwulan represented Indonesia in the men's U17 lead and boulder disciplines.
FPTI said participation in international events is aimed at giving young athletes valuable competitive experience, increasing their exposure to world-class competition, and strengthening the mentality needed to compete at higher levels in the future. ***
