RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The inaugural Indonesian American Games (IAG) 2026 in Chicago, Illinois, highlighted how sports and culture can serve as powerful tools for strengthening community ties among the Indonesian diaspora in the United States.

Beyond competition, the event became a platform for diaspora unity, cultural diplomacy, and the promotion of Indonesia’s identity to international audiences.

Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo described the Games as a clear example of cultural diplomacy that enhances Indonesia’s image abroad.

“Events like this not only strengthen ties among the diaspora but also reinforce Indonesia’s image as a nation that values unity, diversity, and sportsmanship,” he said in a statement from Jakarta on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The first edition of IAG, held at the Wintrust Sports Complex in Chicago, from June 19–21, brought together around 200 participants from Indonesian communities across 50 U.S. states.

Ambassador Dwisuryo expressed hope that the Games would grow into an annual tradition, deepening diaspora solidarity while introducing Indonesian sports and culture to wider international communities.

The event also drew support from the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), with Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari praising its alignment with Olympic values.

“Indonesian American Games show that the Olympic spirit knows no borders, so I truly appreciate the organizers and diaspora communities who made this positive event possible,” said Okto.

Initiated by Davon Arjunaidi, IAG featured seven sports: volleyball, basketball, tennis, pickleball, badminton, mini soccer, and chess.

Alongside the competitions, the Games celebrated Indonesian heritage with traditional dance performances, pencak silat (Indonesian martial art) demonstrations, lacrosse showcases, and a poco‑poco tournament, reflecting the theme “One Nation, One Spirit, One Game.”

Davon emphasized the importance of inclusivity in diaspora activities. He noted that the strong participation reflected the community’s need for events that unite people across professions, ages, and regions in a welcoming atmosphere.

The Games also received official backing from the Indonesian government, marked by the presence of Ambassador Dwisuryo and NOC Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari at the opening ceremony.

“We want to build a sense of belonging as Indonesians, strengthen community networks, and introduce Indonesia’s rich culture to American society through sports and the arts,” Davon concluded.

By combining athletic competition with cultural celebration, IAG 2026 demonstrated how diaspora initiatives can foster community pride, international friendship, and cultural diplomacy in equal measure. ***
