RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian shuttler Jonatan Christie suffered an early exit at the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open 2026, undone by the unusually fast shuttlecock conditions that favored his opponent.
The fourth seed bowed out in the first round after losing in straight games, 16–21, 14–21, to Thailand’s Panitchapon Teeraratsakul in Tokyo on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Jonatan admitted that the shuttlecock speed was markedly different from his practice sessions, forcing him to adjust his strategy mid-match.
“The shuttlecock was much faster today compared to yesterday’s test. I tried to change my playing pattern, but I couldn’t adapt quickly enough,” he said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), as quoted by Antara.
The 28‑year‑old acknowledged that his delayed reaction allowed Panitchapon to dictate the pace, particularly in the second game. Although Jonatan managed a brief run of points, the gap was too wide to close.
“I was late to adapt, and Panitchapon played more aggressively,” he added.
The defeat marked a reversal of fortunes for Jonatan, who had beaten Panitchapon in the semifinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 just weeks earlier. He noted that the Thai player’s attacking style became more effective under the faster shuttlecock conditions in Tokyo.
With Jonatan’s exit, Indonesia’s men’s singles hope now rests on Alwi Farhan and Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah, who remain in contention. ***
