RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s singles shuttler Alwi Farhan enters the Japan Open 2026 in Tokyo, July 14–19 with renewed confidence after securing a gold medal at the Australian Open Super 500 last June.
The 21-year-old is now determined to capture his first BWF World Tour Super 750 title, a milestone that would mark his rise among the sport’s elite.
“I’ve never won a Super 750 title before. I’m ambitious to get one, but every round has its own challenges, so I need to stay focused game by game,” Alwi said during a training session at the Indonesian Badminton Association's (PBSI) Cipayung National Training Center in East Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Although buoyed by his Australian triumph, Alwi admitted his physical condition dipped slightly after competing abroad. “Preparation has been good, though I was sick after Australia, maybe from fatigue. There’s still some tiredness, but progress is positive and I feel ready for Japan Open and China Open,” he explained.
In the opening round, Alwi will face Japanese veteran Kenta Nishimoto, a player he has yet to beat in two previous encounters. This match will be a crucial test of his maturity and ability to maintain momentum.
“He’s a senior player, but I’m different now compared to last year. I’ll prepare myself and give my best performance,” Alwi said.
Alwi highlighted his biggest progress in recent tournaments: gaining experience, composure, and mental strength. “I’ve faced many different opponents at the elite level. My experience, calmness, and mentality have improved positively,” he noted.
He added that while respect for senior players is essential, he refuses to see them as unbeatable. “Respect doesn’t mean overestimating them. On court, everyone fights for the same victory,” he emphasized.
For Alwi, the Japan Open is more than just another tournament; it is a proving ground to show he can sustain his form after winning a Super 500 title. “I’ll go all out in Japan,” he declared, underscoring his determination to break into the Super 750 winners’ circle. ***
