RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s U-18 women’s volleyball team was edged out by Kazakhstan 2-3 (25-17, 23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 13-15) in a dramatic five-set battle during the AVC U-18 2026 classification round for 5th–8th place in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Monday, July 6.
The defeat ended Indonesia’s hopes of finishing fifth in the tournament. The team will now face Mongolia to determine seventh place, while Kazakhstan advances to contest fifth against Vietnam.
Indonesia started strongly, dominating the first set with a seven-point lead at 9-2 and closing it 25-17. However, Kazakhstan regrouped in the second set, capitalizing on defensive adjustments to win 25-23. The third set saw Kazakhstan surge ahead 13-4 before sealing it 25-17.
The fourth set brought Indonesia back into contention, with Khanza Putri Yansi Ganeshtri and teammates pressing hard to secure a 25-21 win. In the deciding set, both teams traded points in a tense finish. Indonesia led 12-9 but Kazakhstan rallied to overturn the score and clinch victory 15-13.
Assistant coach Bobby Ade Setiawan expressed disappointment after the narrow loss. “Today was not our day. In the fifth set we were already leading 12-9, but the opponent managed to catch up,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Despite the setback, Indonesia’s spirited performance highlighted their resilience and potential as they continue to gain valuable international experience. ***
