RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s badminton legacy is set to reach a new generation overseas as Olympic silver medalist Tri Kusharjanto prepares to take a coaching role in Canada, helping develop young talent while expanding Indonesia’s influence in global badminton.

Tri, who won silver in mixed doubles at the Sydney 2000 Olympics alongside Minarti Timur, is scheduled to move to Canada in August after securing a partnership through MSD Sport Agency.

The former Indonesian star said the opportunity represents a new challenge after decades in badminton as both a player and coach.

“Thank you to MSD Sport Agency for helping former badminton athletes continue their careers abroad, either as coaches or players,” Tri said in a statement on Thursday, June 25, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Based in Calgary South Racquet Sports, GX Badminton has tasked Tri with developing young players. He said he had held several online discussions with club officials before accepting the offer.

“I feel honored because I have never received an opportunity like this before. GX Badminton expressed strong interest in working with me,” he added.

He remains one of Indonesia’s most accomplished badminton figures. In addition to his Olympic silver medal, he was part of Indonesia’s Thomas Cup-winning team in 2002.

MSD Sport Agency owner Reyhan Moses Tulaar said Tri’s international reputation was a key factor behind GX Badminton’s decision.

“Tri Kusharjanto has extraordinary achievements in badminton and is well known both in Indonesia and internationally. His Olympic silver medal proves why GX Badminton wanted him as a coach,” Reyhan said.

The agency hopes Tri’s presence will contribute to the growth of badminton in Canada, particularly in youth development, as the sport gains momentum following Canadian player Victor Lai’s victory at the 2026 Indonesia Open.

MSD Sport Agency Chairman Roy Bartolomeus Tulaar said the partnership is part of a broader effort to create overseas career opportunities for Indonesian athletes and former athletes. The agency will provide support ranging from contracts and travel arrangements to legal protection.

Upon arriving in Canada, Tri plans to first assess the abilities of young players before designing training programs tailored to their needs.

“In the initial period, I want to evaluate the talents available there before creating the right training program. This is a major challenge and a valuable opportunity for me,” he concluded. ***
