RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has officially appointed three provinces as hosts of the 2028 National Sports Week (PON). The announcement was made during a coordination meeting on host designation at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Jakarta on Tuesday, 23 June 2026.

Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir handed host designation decrees to Jakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Nusa Tenggara. This officially marks the beginning of preparations for the 2028 games.

The decrees were presented to the three provincial governments during the meeting. The event also served as an initial coordination forum for PON preparations.

The minister met Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, and West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal. They discussed major preparatory aspects for the national sporting event.

Erick emphasized the importance of coordination between the Indonesian Government and regional administrations. He said preparations should be conducted in a measurable and well-planned manner.

The minister also highlighted the need for close coordination among all stakeholders involved. The following statement was delivered during the coordination meeting.

“Today's meeting is a very important first step in building synergy between the central and regional governments to ensure the success of the 22nd National Sports Week in 2028. We want to ensure that the entire preparation process runs well, is measurable, and aligns with the direction of national sports development policies,” he said.

Erick also stressed the importance of transparent and accountable administration throughout preparations. He said improvements should be made based on lessons from previous sporting events.

In addition, Indonesia will prioritize revitalizing existing sports facilities instead of building new venues. The approach supports budget efficiency while maintaining readiness for the 2028 PON.
