RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian para athletics team delivered a commanding performance at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 in Tunisia, finishing as overall champions with a haul of 29 medals.

Competing from June 12–20, the Indonesian squad secured 15 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals--sharing the top spot with Ukraine, which achieved the same tally. Host nation Tunisia placed third with 10 golds, 6 silvers, and 9 bronzes.

Among Indonesia’s standout performers was Saptoyogo Purnomo, who claimed three gold medals in the men’s 100m T37, 200m T37–T38, and the universal 4x100m relay.

Nanda Mei Sholihah matched his achievement with three golds in the women’s 100m T46–47, 200m T46–47, and the relay. Karisma Evi Tiarani added two golds in the women’s 100m T36/42/44 and long jump T42–47.

Team coordinator Purwo Adi Sanyoto praised the athletes’ determination, noting that the results in Tunisia are vital for collecting qualification points toward the Asian Para Games 2026. “Competition among Asian countries was intense, as all sought points for Nagoya,” he said.

Despite the strong showing, Purwo emphasized that no Indonesian athlete has yet secured a place at the Asian Para Games, with qualification points to be finalized by July 31. Indonesia will next compete in Mexico at the end of July to strengthen its bid.

Gold medalist Alfin Nomleni, who won the men’s 400m T20 in 48.82 seconds, expressed pride but vowed to improve further in pursuit of his dream to qualify for both the Asian Para Games and the Paralympics.

Similarly, winner of the men’s javelin F41, Ansyari, pledged to extend his throw distance after facing stiff competition from Cuban athletes.

Following their success in Tunisia, the Indonesian team will resume training in Surakarta, Central Java, before heading to Mexico. That championship will serve as the final opportunity to secure qualification points ahead of the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for October 18–24, 2026. (Diva Rifdah)
