RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - One of Indonesia's most famous marathons was held in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Kenyan runners conquered the tourist area in this world-class event.

Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 opened in the famous Prambanan Temple complex in Sleman Regency on Sunday morning. Held since 2017 with sponsorship from state-owned Bank Mandiri, this year's edition attracted a record number of participants: 10,200 runners from 17 countries.

Themed "More Than a Race," the Mandiri Jogja Marathon combined international-standard running competition with tourism experiences, cultural celebrations, and a journey through the Yogyakarta countryside. The event, awarded a certified measured course by World Athletics, featured four categories: marathon, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K fun run.

Kiprono Koech was the fastest overall male marathon runner with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 28 seconds. The overall women's marathon champion was Eunice Nyawira Muchiri, with a time of 2 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds.

Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, opened the event, alongside Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Erick emphasized his support for holding an international-standard running competition like this.

"So this event is very positive," he said, as quoted in a press release from the country's Ministry of Youth and Sports on Sunday.

"And I believe that sports tourism not only keeps our society healthy, but also contributes to economic growth, which is currently being strongly encouraged by President (Prabowo Subianto)," he said.

Erick said that the Mandiri Jogja Marathon also provides a space for public participation in achieving physical fitness. He hopes that sports participation among Indonesians, which is still around 17 percent, can be increased.

"This means that with activities like this, and I see that there are now 104 marathon events in Indonesia. With a total of almost 10.6 million runners, if I'm not mistaken, it will certainly encourage sports participation among people who have better access to sports," Erick explained.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, Erick continued, is currently promoting the car-free day (CFD) in all regencies/cities to foster a culture of sports among the community. Of the 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia, only around 220 currently hold CFD.

"With car-free day, people might start practicing walking and jogging, and eventually, they might even be able to participate in marathons like this," he said.
