RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister, Erick Thohir, after his meeting with President Prabowo, said that the president is giving serious attention to athletes with disabilities. .
“The President wants to ensure that athletes with disabilities receive proper attention. It is one of the programs we continue to push,” he told reporters in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Friday, 20 June 2026.
Ministter Erick said President Prabowo emphasized that every citizen should have equal opportunities, including people with disabilities in sports. The minister noted that the president intends to inspect the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) facility in Karanganyar, Central Java, which has not yet been officially inaugurated.
The president also wants to meet athletes with disabilities and visit the NPC in Karanganyar. “The President wants to meet directly with the disabled athletes at the NPC Karanganyar,” added Minister Erick.
“He wants to see these athletes in person. This is important because we must give all Indonesians the same opportunities,” he conveyed.
One form of state support for former disabled athletes is empowerment through coaching. Minister Erick said the government hopes retired disabled athletes remain productive after leaving competition.
“One program I conveyed to the president is coaching certification for them. After becoming certified coaches, they can take on coaching roles,” said the minister.
Minister Erick also cited national disability figures, stating there are 23.9 million people with disabilities in Indonesia. Out of this total, 11 percent, about 2.59 million people, engage in sports. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
