RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Argentine Ambassador to Indonesia, Gustavo Ricardo Coppa, said Argentinians enthusiastically welcomed their national team's victory in its opening match of the 2026 World Cup. According to him, Argentinians have a deep passion for football and closely follow every tournament involving the national team, including the 2026 World Cup.
"Argentina is a country whose society is deeply passionate about football. Argentinians follow not only the World Cup, but every tournament in which the national football team participates," Coppa said in an interview with Voice of Indonesia's Soccer Fiesta program on Friday, June 19, 2026.
He said the team's opening match had been eagerly anticipated, not only by people in Argentina but also by Argentine communities living abroad.
"We had been looking forward to it with great excitement, not only in Argentina but also overseas. Argentinians living far from home experienced the moment in a very special way as well," he said.
Coppa also said Argentinians around the world gathered to watch the match together, as seen in numerous posts on social media.
He added that Indonesia was no exception, with members of the Argentine community in the country holding watch parties to celebrate the victory of the team known as La Albiceleste.
"Argentinians gathered in many places around the world to watch the match. Indonesia was no exception. We came together, watched the game, and enjoyed the moment," he said.
Coppa also expressed appreciation for the strong support shown by Indonesians toward the Argentine national team. According to him, many Argentine fans in Indonesia shared the joy of the team's opening victory. Argentina secured a 3-0 victory over Algeria in their Group J match at the 2026 World Cup at Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with all three goals scored by Lionel Messi.
