RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s rising badminton star Alwi Farhan captured the Australian Open 2026 men’s singles crown after defeating China’s Dong Tian Yao with identical scores of 21-13, 21-13 in the final at Quaycentre, Sydney, on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Speaking after the match, Alwi expressed deep gratitude and relief following recent challenges. “I feel extremely happy because a few months ago I was very shaken by what happened at the Thomas Cup. But alhamdulillah, I am thankful to everyone who criticized, supported, and prayed for me,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Alwi explained that he had studied Dong’s playing style by learning from earlier encounters against his compatriots Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah. Drawing on those insights, he analyzed Dong’s strengths and weaknesses.
“He has a tall posture, so his overhead shots are sharp. In the first game I managed to control the play, and although the second game was tight at the start, I returned to the same pattern as the first,” Alwi noted.
The victory marks Alwi’s second BWF Super 500 title in his career, yet he insisted he would not be complacent. “Lately, as we know, Indonesian badminton has faced very tough times. I hope our badminton can improve soon,” he said, underscoring his commitment to the sport’s future.
This triumph adds to Alwi’s growing reputation as one of Indonesia’s promising talents, reinforcing his role in the country’s efforts to regain strength on the global badminton stage. ***
