RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Seventeen-year-old defender Mathew Baker marked a historic debut for Indonesia’s senior national team, becoming the youngest player ever to represent the country.

Baker played a key role in Indonesia’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Oman at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday, June 5, 2026, ending a 38-year wait for a win against a Middle Eastern side.

Baker revealed that he received valuable guidance from senior teammate Kevin Diks, who plays in the Bundesliga. “He really supports me. He’s someone to look up to, a Bundesliga player,” Baker said in Jakarta on Saturday, June 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

During the training camp, Diks offered Baker advice and encouragement to help him adapt to the senior squad. “He often spoke with me during camp, giving tips and support. He told me: just ask if you need anything,” Baker explained, calling the mentorship a blessing that helped him perform with confidence.

Baker expressed pride in setting a new record as Indonesia’s youngest-ever senior international. “Honestly, the word proud is not enough. It feels incredible to achieve this record now,” he said, thanking head coach John Herdman for trusting him with the opportunity.

The Indonesia-Australia dual heritage player first appeared for the U17 national team at the FIFA U17 World Cup in November 2025, later becoming a regular under coach Nova Arianto. His rapid rise has now taken him to the senior squad, where he strengthens the defense alongside experienced teammates.

Indonesia’s victory over Oman was part of the FIFA Match Day series, with one more fixture scheduled against Mozambique at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. For Baker, the journey from U17 to senior level reflects both his personal growth and the promise of Indonesia’s next generation of football talent. ***
