RRI.CO.ID, Sukoharjo - Indonesian junior tennis player Komang Bagus Wahyu Purustama has reached the quarterfinals of the DETEC International Junior Championship 2026 tournament in Sukoharjo, Central Java. The 14‑year‑old secured his place after sweeping all matches in the group stage.

This achievement sets up a potential rematch against the tournament’s third seed, Joachim Mika Gunawan of Jakarta. The highly anticipated clash will be held at Gelora Merdeka Tennis Stadium.

Komang, a member of Kentoeng Tennis Academy, emphasized his mental readiness for the decisive match. Reflecting on his final group-stage victory over a Chinese opponent, he admitted losing focus in the second set but managed to recover in the super tiebreak.

“I tried to stay calm, ignore the protests, and play freely--and that helped me win,” said Komang, who is also a student at state-run junior high school SMPN 1 Bendosari, Sukoharjo.

Despite facing older and more experienced rivals, Komang remains optimistic. “I’m playing with nothing to lose. I’m only 14, but I’m determined to go for the title,” he said.

Gunawan, the third seed, has advanced without dropping a set. Other quarterfinal fixtures include Muhammad Alfaradu Sumirat against compatriot Rafa Jeconia Verdasco Mangunsong, Rafael Enrico Pribadi versus American player Brian Duan, and host player Muhammad Jafar Harisah against second seed Brandon Duan.

The draw ensures Indonesia will secure at least two places in the boys’ singles semifinals.

The International Junior Federation (ITF) tournament is organized in collaboration with Kentoeng Tennis Academy, with Deddy Prasetyo Tennis Club (DETEC) reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Indonesia’s youth tennis ecosystem. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
