RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s singles star Jonatan Christie is already shifting his attention to upcoming tournaments after bowing out in the quarterfinals of the BWF World Tour Super 500 Malaysia Masters 2026, at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, May 22.
Jonatan fell to China’s Hu Zhe An in three games, 21-14, 13-21, 16-21. Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of preparation for the Singapore Open (Super 750) and the Indonesia Open (Super 1000).
“Preparation for Singapore and Indonesia must be sharpened further. Each day brings different conditions, and the courts and shuttlecocks vary, so quick adaptation is essential,” he said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) after the match, as quoted by Antara.
Reflecting on his match in Malaysia, Jonatan noted he started strongly and dominated the first game. However, Hu managed to read his patterns in the second, forcing Jonatan to struggle with adjustments.
“In the second game he began to read my playing style, and I wasn’t ready to change patterns quickly,” Jonatan admitted.
In the deciding game, Jonatan attempted to chase down the deficit but faltered at crucial points. “In the third game I tried to catch up, but I lost some key points, and turning the situation around was not easy,” he explained.
Despite the setback, Jonatan remains determined to regroup and perform better in the next two major tournaments. According to the official BWF schedule, he will open his campaign at the Singapore Open against India’s Prannoy H.S., a familiar rival whom Jonatan leads 7–3 in their previous ten encounters. ***
