RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s hopes of topping Group D at the 2026 Thomas Cup came under immediate pressure after two opening defeats against France, leaving the team needing a strong comeback to stay in contention in Horsens, Denmark.

Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan both fell in their respective singles matches, putting Indonesia 0-2 behind in the decisive group-stage tie. Jonatan lost the opening match to Christo Popov 19-21, 14-21, admitting that unforced errors proved costly despite being physically fit.

“Physically everything was fine, but maybe slightly hindered in the lower part. I already did my best, and recovery was also very good,” Jonatan said in an official statement, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He added that although he managed to match his opponent’s rhythm early on, mistakes allowed Popov to regain control. “I actually had chances to take over points, but losing the first game cost me momentum,” he said, while also praising his opponent’s solid defense and patience.

Indonesia’s situation worsened after Alwi Farhan was defeated by Alex Lanier 16-21, 19-21 in the second match.

Alwi acknowledged that the pressure of needing a win affected his performance. “Because we needed a victory, that feeling haunted me. I felt the pressure more,” he said.

He noted that while the opponent’s playing pattern remained similar, Lanier’s powerful shots made a significant difference. “His power was very strong, and I failed to anticipate it several times,” Alwi added, pointing to errors in reading attacks at crucial moments.

Trailing 0-2, Indonesia must now win all three remaining matches to overturn the tie and maintain their chances of finishing as Group D winners.

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is set to face Toma Junior Popov in the third singles match, followed by doubles pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani against Eloi Adam/Leo Rossi.

The final match will see Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri take on the Popov brothers, Christo and Toma Junior. Despite the setback, Indonesia still has a path to recovery if they can secure at least three victories in the remaining matches.
