RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen saw her singles campaign at the Madrid Open 2026 come to an end in the second round on Friday, April 24, 2026. Facing the tournament’s 20th seed, Liudmila Samsonova, Tjen struggled to find her rhythm, eventually falling 6-2, 6-1 at Court 8 of the Caja Magica.
Samsonova delivered a clinical performance, leveraging a powerful service game to dominate the match. The Russian athlete recorded an 82.6 percent first-serve accuracy and won 84.2 percent of those points in the opening set.
She maintained this momentum into the second set, eliminating double faults and successfully converting three out of four break-point opportunities to seal the victory.
Samsonova now advances to the third round, where she awaits the winner of the match between 13th seed Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic and Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.
Despite the defeat, this tournament marks a positive shift for Tjen. The world-class athlete successfully broke a streak of four consecutive first-round exits in previous WTA events, including the Merida Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open, and the Charleston Open.
Her progress to the second round in Madrid signals a return to competitive form on the international stage.
Janice’s journey in Madrid is not yet over. She remains active in the women’s doubles category alongside her senior national teammate, Aldila Sutjiadi. The duo, who secured gold at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand and claimed a WTA 250 title in Chennai last November, are set to compete in the Round of 16.
They are waiting to face either the Asian pair Eri Hozumi and Fang-Hsien Wu or the 6th-seeded duo of Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. ***
