RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Against the backdrop of a global multi-sport stage in Hainan, Indonesia used the opening ceremony of the Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026 to project a cultural statement, showcasing traditional Malay attire from Riau and Jambi as a reflection of national identity and sporting ambition on Wednesday evening, 22 April 2026.

“We want to showcase the dignity and identity of the Indonesian nation on the international stage, while also bringing a spirit of unity and optimism for the entire contingent,” Chef de Mission of the Indonesian contingent for the Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026, Krisna Bayu, said in a statement received in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara.

Krisna himself appeared at the opening ceremony wearing traditional Malay attire from Riau, which carries deep cultural meaning. The outfit reflects politeness, dignity, and the strong coastal cultural roots that have long been part of Indonesia’s national identity.

Beach volleyball athlete Bintang Akbar also made a striking appearance, carrying the Indonesian Red and White flag while dressed in traditional Jambi attire. The touch of tapis motifs and songket accents not only enhanced his appearance but also represented values of honour, local wisdom, and the hope for achievements carried by the Indonesian contingent.

Meanwhile, athletes and officials wore modern white tracksuits enriched with traditional motifs. This combination created an elegant yet meaningful impression, linking cultural heritage with the competitive spirit of today’s generation. The songket and tapis motifs featured in the attire are also symbols of respect for local artisans and efforts to preserve cultural values through sport.

Krisna added that Indonesia’s appearance at the opening ceremony represented the spirit brought into competition: pride in national identity, unity as one team, and readiness to compete for the best achievements.

Indonesia is represented by a total of 22 male and female athletes at the Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026, competing in three sports disciplines. The beach volleyball team, consisting of six athletes, will begin competition on Thursday, April 23.

In addition, the 3x3 basketball team, consisting of eight athletes, will compete starting Saturday, April 25, while the sport climbing team, also made up of eight athletes, will begin their campaign on Tuesday, April 28. ***
