RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian rising star Janice Tjen ended a streak of early exits by advancing to the second round of the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open 2026, after overcoming Russia’s Alina Charaeva in straight sets in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday, April 22.
Playing on Court 7 of the Caja Magica, Janice initially struggled to find her rhythm but steadied herself in the second set to close out the match 6–4, 6–2, according to WTA records, Antara reported.
Ranked No. 39 in the world, Janice sought to dictate play against Charaeva, who sits at No. 129, but the Russian put up a determined fight. The statistics underline the contest: Janice fired five aces to Charaeva’s three, while keeping her errors in check with only three double faults compared to her opponent’s nine.
Janice landed 74 percent of her first serves, winning 65 percent of points behind them, and added 67 percent success on her second serve. She also converted five of eight break point opportunities, a decisive factor in her victory.
The result marks a welcome turnaround for the 23‑year‑old Jakarta native, who had fallen in the opening round of her last four tournaments. Her struggles included early exits at the WTA 500 Merida Open in Mexico, Indian Wells, Miami Open, and Charleston Open.
In the second round in Madrid, Janice will face 20th seed Liudmila Samsonova, who received a first‑round bye.
Before that, she is set to compete in doubles alongside compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi, the SEA Games 2025 gold medalist. The Indonesian duo will take on Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Denmark’s Clara Tauson on Thursday, April 23. ***
