RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national skateboarding team is making steady progress on the international stage, with several athletes improving their positions in the latest World Skateboarding Ranking, which serves as a key pathway toward qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Indonesia's skateboard athlete Basral Graito Hutomo is ranked 38th in the latest World Skateboarding Ranking release, which also increases his chances of advancing to the Olympic qualification phase for Los Angeles 2028.

“Target is to reach the world top 40 by the end of March 2028. If achieved, he will qualify from the first qualification phase and move into the second phase, which will be attended by the 44 highest-ranked athletes,” Indonesian National Skateboard Team Manager Achmad Topan said in Jakarta on Friday, April 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Basral, the gold medalist at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, climbed 18 places after collecting a total of 3,651 points. The points were earned through his performances at the WST World Cup Rome 2025 and the WST Sao Paulo Street & Park World Championship 2026.

Basral’s progress in the men’s street category is followed by Sanggoe Darma Tanjung, who jumped 26 places to 64th in the world. Sanggoe now holds 1,421 points after competing in two world championship events in Rome, Italy in 2025 and Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier this year.

In the women’s street category, 2025 SEA Games silver medalist Ni Wayan Malana Fairbrother rose 16 places to 46th in the world with 2,666 points. The Bali-born athlete earned 1,500 points from the Skateboarding World Championship in Brazil after reaching the quarterfinal stage.

Her teammate Zeefara Darmawan also showed significant improvement, climbing 21 places to 59th in the world.

In the women’s park category, Mikhayla Shanum Caya and Nyimas Bunga Cinta both rose 14 places, now ranked 70th and 71st in the world. Meanwhile, in the men’s park category, Firdausy Nuzula recorded a 25-place jump to 77th in the world.

Achmad Topan explained that if Indonesian athletes manage to break into the top 20 in the second qualification phase, they will automatically secure tickets to the Olympics. He said Indonesia’s chances are strong due to international quota restrictions per country.

“If from those 44 athletes we can enter the top 20, we automatically qualify for the Olympics. Currently, countries like Japan can have eight to ten athletes in the top 40, while each country is limited to a maximum of three athletes per category and per gender,” Topan added.

The World Skateboarding Ranking system is based on points earned through participation in competitions sanctioned by World Skate. The more frequently athletes compete in these events, the higher their chances of improving their ranking.

In addition, World Skate points expire over time, meaning ranking changes are also influenced by athletes who do not compete in recent events or whose points have expired.

So far, Indonesia has never sent skateboarders to this multi-sport global event since skateboarding was first introduced as a medal sport at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. ***
