RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Mixed fortunes for the Indonesian men’s doubles pairs marked the opening round of the 2026 Swiss Open, with Leo Rolly Carnando/Bagas Maulana advancing while two other Indonesian pairs exited early at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel on Wednesday morning, March 11, 2026.
Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin were eliminated in the first round after losing 17-21, 17-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-Wei. The defeat ended Raymond/Joaquin’s momentum following their surprise run to the semifinals of the 2026 All England.
“Our start was good, but we lost focus from the middle to the end and that has to be our evaluation,” Joaquin said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), as quoted by Antara.
Raymond echoed the assessment, admitting they struggled to maintain concentration and rhythm during crucial moments of the match. Joaquin added that both players were physically fit and not dealing with injuries, saying the loss came down to tactical mistakes.
“We lost and we acknowledge that,” he said, adding that the pair will now shift their focus to preparing for the Orleans Masters 2026 starting next week.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s third-seeded pair Leo Rolly Carnando/Bagas Maulana secured a place in the second round after defeating Chiang Chien-Wei and Wu Hsuan-Yi 21-16, 21-14. Bagas said the key to their victory was limiting their opponents’ overhead attacks, taking into account the physical advantage of the taller Taiwanese pair.
“Today we tried to limit their high shots because with their height and power they have very strong smashes. We anticipated that,” Bagas said.
After an early exit at the All England, Leo/Bagas said they had made several adjustments and aimed to bounce back strongly at the Swiss Open. “We’re trying to rise again here and stay more focused,” Leo said.
With other Indonesian men’s doubles pairs, Muhammad Rian Ardianto/Rahmat Hidayat and Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin, already eliminated, Leo/Bagas are now the country’s only remaining representatives in the discipline.
Bagas said the pair was not burdened by that status and would try to play with a relaxed mindset. “We want to enjoy the matches and stay calm even though we’re now the only men’s doubles pair left. We want to go as far as possible,” he concluded. ***
