RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s presence in the global surfing arena has reached a new high as three national athletes, Bronson Meydi, Ketut Agus, and Dylan Wilcoxen, officially qualified for the prestigious World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series. The achievement follows a stellar Qualifying Series (QS) season where the trio dominated the Asian regional rankings.
National surfing head coach Arya Subyakto confirmed on Friday, March 6, 2026, that the surfers secured their tickets by finishing within the top five of the Asian regional rankings, a prerequisite for entering the Challenger level.
The qualified roster represents a compelling blend of seasoned competitors and breakout stars. Bronson Meydi returns as a veteran of the Challenger Series, having solidified his regional ranking with a major victory at the WSL QS 6,000 Siargao in the Philippines last October.
He is joined by Ketut Agus, who makes a triumphant return to this level of competition after his previous campaign was cut short by injury, his comeback was fueled by a dominant championship win at the QS 6,000 Siheung Korea Open in July 2025. Rounding out the trio is 16-year-old Dylan Wilcoxen, the Mentawai-based prodigy and newest addition to the Challenger level, whose "shocking" breakout season was highlighted by a significant victory at the Nias Pro QS 6,000.
The Challenger Series serves as the final gateway to the elite WSL Championship Tour. To earn a permanent spot among the world's best, the Indonesian surfers must finish the season in the global top 10.
Coach Arya noted that the competition will intensify significantly, with nearly 100 of the world’s best surfers from every continent vying for promotion. He cited the success of Rio Waida, who famously broke into the main world tour, as an inspiration for the team.
"Dylan really surprised us this year. He won in Nias at the QS 6,000 and that proves he can play in various wave conditions," said Arya.
He added that Dylan, originally known for his prowess in large Mentawai swells, has shown remarkable adaptability in smaller waves, as quoted by Antara.
While the athletes focus on their professional circuits, the national team is also eyeing the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The event is a critical milestone, as gold medalists will secure a direct qualification path toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"In Challenger Series, they will face around 90 to 100 of the best surfers from various continents. Hopefully, Bronson, Ketut Agus, and Dylan can finish in the top 10, because they certainly have the ability for that," Arya concluded. ***
