RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen and her Polish partner Katarzyna Piter bowed out in the doubles semifinals of the Merida Open in Mexico after losing to second seeds Cristina Bucsa and Jiang Xinyu on Friday local time, or Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Indonesia.

Janice and Piter put up a strong fight in the opening set but fell 5-7, 6-2 to the Spanish-Chinese pair after one hour and 24 minutes.

According to WTA statistics, Bucsa and Jiang recorded a first-serve rate of 68.4 percent. However, Janice and Piter won 68.4 percent of their first-serve points. The Indonesian-Polish duo also led in first-return points, while Bucsa and Jiang proved superior on second returns.

As reported by Antara, at 5-5 in the first set, Bucsa and Jiang handled the crucial points better, converting two of three break-point opportunities to take the opener.

Bucsa and Jiang carried their momentum into the second set by claiming the first game, but Janice and Piter responded immediately to level the score. Janice and Piter posted an 81 percent first-serve rate in the second set, yet their strong serving was not enough as Bucsa and Jiang dominated the return game.

The second seeds won three consecutive games to move ahead 4-1. Janice and Piter tried to disrupt the rhythm by taking a game, but Bucsa and Jiang closed out the match.

The doubles defeat ended Janice’s campaign at the WTA 500 tournament after she also exited in the first round of singles, losing 4-6, 3-6 to Colombia’s Camila Osorio.

The result marked an improvement for Janice and Piter compared to their first-round exit at the 2026 Australian Open. The pair have won two titles together, lifting the WTA 250 Guangzhou trophy last year and the WTA 250 Hobart title in January. ***
