RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen has carved out a breakthrough moment on the WTA Tour, advancing to the doubles semifinals of the Merida Open alongside Polish partner Katarzyna Piter. Their run continued on Thursday, February 26, 2026, local time in Mexico, where the pair overcame Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and American Ann Li in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3.
The opening set proved dramatic. Despite trailing 2-5, Janice and Piter rallied with powerful serving -- landing 72 percent of their first serves and firing three aces -- to force a tie-break, which they clinched with confidence, Antara reported.
The second set began evenly, but after Bouzkova/Li briefly edged ahead, the Indonesian-Polish duo responded with more aggressive play, converting three of six break-point opportunities and maintaining a 75 percent first-serve success rate. They closed out the match in one hour and 33 minutes.
The victory sets up a semifinal clash against second seeds Cristina Bucsa of Spain and China’s Xinyu Jiang, scheduled for Saturday, February 28, at 3 a.m. Jakarta Time. Bucsa/Jiang booked their place by defeating India’s Rutuja Bhosale and Japan’s Makoto Ninomiya, 6-2, 6-3.
For Janice, the doubles success comes as redemption after her singles campaign ended early with a first-round loss to Colombia’s Camila Osorio, 4-6, 3-6. Now, she has a chance to make history in the doubles draw of the WTA 500 event. ***
