RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen signaled her readiness for elite competition by overpowering Brazil’s Beatrice Haddad Maia in the first round of the Qatar Total Energies Open 2026 in Doha on Monday, February 9, marking her first victory at a WTA 1000 tournament.
Competing on a wildcard entry, the 23-year-old Jakarta-born player delivered a dominant performance to defeat Haddad Maia 6-0, 6-1 in one hour and nine minutes, according to WTA statistics, Antara reported.
Janice was initially scheduled to face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the opening round. However, Cirstea withdrew after winning the WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on Saturday, February 7. Haddad Maia then entered the main draw as a lucky loser after losing in the qualifying round.
Janice started the match strongly, using her serve as a key weapon. She recorded two aces and converted three of seven break-point opportunities to comfortably secure the first set.
In the second set, Haddad Maia attempted to fight back and produced two aces of her own. However, Janice continued to dominate on serve and return points, applying consistent pressure on her opponent.
Maintaining disciplined play, Janice converted two of three break points in the second set and closed out the match after dropping just one game overall.
The victory advanced Janice to the second round in her first appearance at a WTA 1000 tournament.
Prior to Doha, Janice also made her debut at the WTA 500 level in Abu Dhabi, where she won her opening match by defeating Australia’s rising No.1 player Maya Joint in a three-set encounter. Her singles run ended in the second round after a loss to fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Despite the singles exit in Abu Dhabi, Janice posted a strong result in doubles. Partnering with Filipino player Alexandra Eala, she reached the semifinals after defeating second seeds Zhang Shuai and Cristina Bucsa. ***
