RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen will compete in both singles and doubles at the 2026 Abu Dhabi Open, held from January 31 to February 7 in the United Arab Emirate, aiming to build on her recent international achievements.
Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has thrown his support behind the country's rising tennis star as she prepares for the WTA 500 tournament. “Best wishes for Janice in her fight to bring pride to Indonesia,” Minister Erick wrote on his official social media account, as quoted by Antara on Monday, February 3, 2026.
Janice, born in Jakarta, will feature in both the women’s singles and doubles events. In singles, she has received a wildcard entry and will begin her campaign in the opening round. In doubles, she will team up with Filipino player Alex Eala.
The Abu Dhabi Open comes shortly after Janice’s appearance at the Australian Open 2026 in Melbourne, held January 18 to February 1. Her singles run ended in the second round against former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, while her doubles bid with Poland’s Katarzyna Piter concluded in the first round against Daria Kasatkina and Arina Rodionova.
Despite the setback, Janice remains one of Indonesia’s most promising players. Her breakthrough year came in 2025, when she made her Grand Slam and WTA Tour debut, clinching titles at the WTA 250 Chennai Open and WTA 250 Hobart International.
At 23, she also became the first Indonesian woman since 2004 to reach a Grand Slam main draw, collecting multiple International Tennis Federation (ITF) titles and earning recognition such as ITF Player of the Month.
Her most recent achievement was winning two gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, one in the women’s team event and another in doubles alongside Aldila Sutjiadi. ***
