RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia ended its campaign in the women’s singles event at the Indonesia Masters 2026 after Putri Kusuma Wardhani was eliminated in the second round on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The 21-year-old shuttler lost a closely contested three-game match against Taiwan’s Huang Yu-Hsun, 17-21, 21-19, 17-21, at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan, Jakarta. The defeat left Indonesia without any representative in the women’s singles category at the Super 500 tournament.

The result also meant Indonesia failed to improve on its 2025 performance, when its women’s singles players reached the quarterfinals through Putri and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

“I couldn’t bring out my best performance because my opponent clearly prepared a very solid strategy and game plan,” Putri said after the match, as quoted by Antara.

She admitted that the attacking patterns she had prepared did not work as expected, as Huang played consistently throughout the match. “From the first game to the third game, I struggled to execute the strategy we had planned,” she added.

Putri said she will now prioritize physical recovery, noting that the three tournaments she has competed in at the start of the year have significantly drained her stamina.

“I need some rest and more training so I can fix the mistakes from these three tournaments and work on my weaknesses in practice,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Indonesian men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Mohamad Shohibul Fikri secured a place in the quarterfinals after overcoming a tough challenge from fellow Indonesians Leo Rolly Carnando/Bagas Maulana on Thursday. Fajar/Fikri won the second-round match 21-16, 18-21, 21-13.

“We need to evaluate our stamina and focus. Playing three games definitely took a toll, so recovery will be very important after this match,” Fajar said after the match. He acknowledged that Leo/Bagas caused significant challenges, particularly with their tight net play, describing them as a difficult pair to contain.

Fikri added that communication between the two was key to addressing their weaknesses, especially after losing the second game. “We communicated more and figured out how to overcome the challenges we faced in the second game,” he said.

In the quarterfinals, Fajar/Fikri are scheduled to face compatriots Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin on Friday, January 23. ***
