KBRN, New Delhi: Indonesian badminton star Jonatan “Jojo” Christie has booked his place in the quarterfinals of the India Open 2026 after a commanding straight-games victory over Japan’s Yushi Tanaka at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex on Thursday, January 15.

The third seed avenged his defeat at the 2025 Australian Open, prevailing 21-15, 21-19 in a match that lasted 56 minutes.

Although the scoreline suggests a comfortable win, Jojo admitted the contest was far from easy. He described Tanaka’s style as technically sharper than many of his compatriots, forcing him to stay alert against the Japanese player’s precise footwork, varied shot-making, and patience throughout the rallies.

The match unfolded as a test of composure, with both players trading points in tense exchanges. Jojo’s concentration was further challenged by a bleeding finger injury, which he endured until the final point.

Conditions inside the New Delhi arena added another layer of difficulty. The cold weather required Jojo to adjust his preparation, extending his warm-up to ensure his body was fully primed for the intensity of competition. His disciplined approach underlined the professionalism behind his performance.

Jojo will next face France’s Christo Popov, who advanced after a hard-fought match of his own. Anticipating another demanding encounter, the Indonesian acknowledged Popov’s strengths as a left-handed player with unique tactical advantages. “I need to be more alert and better prepared because Popov is not an easy opponent to break down,” Jojo said.
