KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia’s women’s badminton squad secured a place in the 2025 SEA Games team semifinals after sweeping Myanmar 3-0 in the quarterfinals held in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on Sunday.
According to the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), Putri Kusuma Wardani opened the tie with a hard-fought victory over Thet Htar Thuzar, rallying from a first-game loss to win 17-21, 22-20, 21-13.
World No. 7 Gregoria Mariska Tunjung doubled Indonesia’s lead with a commanding performance, defeating Eaint Chit Phoo 21-9, 21-7. The decisive point came from the doubles pair Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum, who comfortably overcame Su Latt and Khaing Thin Zar 21-10, 21-6.
Despite her win, Putri admitted she was not fully satisfied with her performance in the opening match.
“I felt some pressure today. In the second game, I kept trying to place the shuttle well because in the first and parts of the second game, I made too many unforced errors. Support from my teammates and coach Imam Tohari kept me fighting until the end,” she said on PBSI's official website.
Gregoria, who has long carried the responsibility of playing first singles, empathized with Putri’s experience. “For years as the first singles, I’ve felt the pressure of opening matches. Hopefully Putri can learn from this. It’s good for her development. She was in a tough situation but managed to win,” Gregoria explained.
Quoting Antara, Indonesia will face Malaysia in the semifinals on Monday, December 8, after Malaysia defeated Vietnam 3-1. The other semifinal will see Thailand take on Singapore.
Meanwhile, in the men’s team event, Indonesia has already secured a semifinal berth after receiving a bye in the draw. On Monday, the men’s squad will meet the winner of the Singapore vs. Laos quarterfinal, scheduled for Sunday afternoon. ***
