KBRN, Jakarta: The football landscape in Southeast Asia is entering a new chapter with the launch of the FIFA ASEAN Cup as announced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The announcement followed the signing of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FIFA and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), witnessed by ASEAN Chair and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We are delighted to continue demonstrating our support for the ASEAN community through the launch of the FIFA ASEAN Cup,” Infantino said via FIFA’s official platform, as quoted by antaranews.com.

“This tournament will be a remarkable addition to the regional football calendar, with a significant impact not only in Southeast Asia but also by giving ASEAN’s top players a chance to shine on the global stage,” Infantino continued.

He emphasized that the new tournament aims to unite countries across the region, though details regarding its format and its relationship with the existing AFF Championship (formerly the Tiger Cup) remain unclear.

Infantino assured that all key stakeholders, including the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), and FIFA member associations from ASEAN countries, will be actively involved in shaping the competition.

The MoU signed at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre updates the original agreement made in Bangkok in 2019. It outlines joint efforts to enhance football in Southeast Asia across several areas, including integrity in the sport, football for social development, FIFA football schools, and capacity building for regional football institutions.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the renewed collaboration, stating, “We are here to continue the partnership between FIFA and ASEAN.”

The summit also marked a historic milestone for Timor-Leste, which was officially admitted as the newest member of ASEAN after a 14-year effort. Timor-Leste has long been part of the Southeast Asian football community, having participated in the Tiger Cup in 2004, the SEA Games in 2003, and fielded its national football team in the 2009 SEA Games.

Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmāo joined other ASEAN leaders in witnessing the MoU signing, underscoring the region’s commitment to strengthening football as a tool for unity and development.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to become a cornerstone of regional sports diplomacy, reinforcing ASEAN’s collective identity through the universal language of football.

The launch of the FIFA ASEAN Cup holds particular significance for Indonesia, a nation with a deep-rooted passion for football and a growing drive to elevate its presence on the global stage. As one of the largest countries in Southeast Asia, Indonesia stands to gain from increased regional exposure, competitive opportunities, and strategic partnerships that the new tournament promises to foster.

The tournament could serve as a catalyst for Indonesia’s football development programs, offering a structured platform for emerging talent to compete at a higher level.

With FIFA’s backing, the ASEAN Cup is expected to bring enhanced visibility, better infrastructure support, and access to global best practices in coaching, youth development, and sports governance. This aligns with Indonesia’s broader goals of professionalizing its domestic leagues and nurturing a pipeline of players capable of performing internationally.

As Indonesia prepares for future milestones, including its long-term vision of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, the ASEAN Cup offers a timely and strategic opportunity to sharpen its competitive edge, deepen regional ties, and showcase its footballing potential to a global audience. ***
