KBRN, Bogor: Indonesia added another bronze medal on Sunday, October 5, 2025, the final day of the World Youth and Junior SAMBO Championship 2025. This latest medal was contributed by young athlete Suryo Nugroho in the Men's Combat 79 kg class.
Competing at the JSI Resort Convention Hall, Megamendung, Bogor, West Java, Suryo secured the bronze after being defeated by Armen Safaryan from Armenia in the semi-final match, which prevented him from advancing to the final round. Suryo was unable to overcome Safaryan's aggressive start, but the result successfully secured a medal for Indonesia at the international event.
Suryo's bronze medal completes the total haul for the Indonesian contingent, which had previously secured two other medals: Bronze by Amelia Devy for Women's Sport Junior +80 kg class and another Bronze by Handezka Vaktorias for Men's Combat Junior 64 kg class.
With a total of three bronze medals, the achievement of the Indonesian National Sambo Team exceeded initial expectations. The Central Board of the Indonesian Sambo Association (PP Persambi) had not set specific medal targets, despite Indonesia serving as the host nation for the world championship.
The event, which was participated in by 34 countries, gathered the world's best athletes, including those from former Soviet Union countries known for their strong tradition in the Russian martial art of Sambo. This success is particularly noteworthy given that the Indonesian National Sambo Team had only ten days of preparation.
Arnold Silalahi, the Secretary-General of PP Persambi, commented on the achievement: "Indeed, Indonesian Sambo athletes have often won bronze and silver medals in both Asian and world championships. However, the acquisition of three bronze medals at the 2025 World Youth and Junior SAMBO Championship is extraordinary."
"The results would be different if we had prepared for three months. They were able to gain international experience competing against world-class Sambo athletes. In the future, they can be more motivated," he added.
