KBRN, Jakarta: Just one victory away from a historic main draw berth at the US Open 2025, Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen has advanced to the final round of the qualifiers.

Quoted from the US Open website in Jakarta, competing in the second round of qualifiers on Thursday, August 21 (local time) or Friday Jakarta time, Janice successfully defeated Polish player, Maja Chwalińska with a close score of 7-5, 7-5. Janice came back from a 5-3 deficit and saved two set points in the first set.

According to US Open statistics, the Jakarta-born player recorded five aces and five winners, with 78 total points, to seal the victory in one hour and 45 minutes.

Janice's victory on the hard court of the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York was also noted by the WTA as the 23-year-old player's 99th career win since graduating from Pepperdine University in May 2025. Next, in the final round of qualifiers, Janice will face a big challenge against the third seed, Japanese player Aoi Ito, who defeated Spanish player, Maristany Zuleta De Reales with a score of 6-0, 1-6, 6-1.

Both are in their best form. Ito has surprised Jasmine Paolini and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova this summer, defeating world No. 8 Paolini in the second round of the WTA 1000 Montreal. Approximately one week later, the 21-year-old also defeated Pavlyuchenkova in the second round of the WTA 1000 Cincinnati.

As reported by antaranews.com, Janice was a runner-up in the ITF W75 Lexington and ITF W100 Landisville in Pennsylvania for two consecutive weeks earlier this month, allowing her to enter the US Open ranked 147th in the WTA. She successfully qualified for the US Open after entering the WTA's Top 200 ranking.

She achieved this success thanks to her outstanding performance, which led her to be named the ITF Player of the Month for two consecutive months in May and June, including an unbroken winning streak of 42 sets.

Both Janice and Ito have contrasting playing styles. Ito attacks with her backhand while delivering a series of slices and high balls to her opponent's forehand, while Tjen has a combination of forehand shots and precise sliced backhands, reminiscent of her favorite player, Ashleigh Barty.

Tjen is striving to become the first Indonesian player to enter a Grand Slam main draw since Angelique Widjaja at the US Open in 2004. ***
