KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Taekwondo Association (PB TI) is preparing athletes through national training camps (Pelatnas) to compete in 10 taekwondo classes at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. The association has set a target of contributing two gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games.
"There are nine athletes with their respective classes and one poomsae team class consisting of three people that we have prepared according to the Pelatnas quota," said PB TI Secretary-General, Amrin Ibrahim, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The 10 taekwondo classes to be entered are men's under 87 kg (kilogram), under 80 kg, under 74 kg, under 63 kg, under 54 kg, and women's under 57 kg, under 53 kg, under 49 kg, under 46 kg, as well as the men's team poomsae.
He explained that the association implements a promotion and relegation system for the national training camp athletes through the PB TI taekwondo national selection. The first selection was held on August 2 to filter 10 athletes, and the second selection will filter the number down to nine athletes.
"Later, before the entry by name of the athletes to the SEA Games, we will hold another selection," he said.
This promotion and relegation system encourages athletes to show their best abilities, resulting in the most potential athletes to achieve at the SEA Games in Thailand, which will take place in December 2025.
Amrin explained that the selected athletes for the national training camp will be intensively coached to achieve the medal target at Southeast Asia's largest multi-sport event.
Additionally, PB TI has also prepared two training camp programs in South Korea. The first program was carried out in June 2025, and preparations are underway for the second program.
He is optimistic about the abilities of the athletes and that Indonesian taekwondo has a great opportunity to meet this medal target. ***
