KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia is set to showcase its capabilities on the international stage, as the Indonesian Athletics Association (PB PASI) confirmed that Medan's Madya Stadium, North Sumatra, will host the 17th SEA U18 and U20 Athletics Championships from November 15-18, 2025.
"This championship has been regularly held since 2006 and this year marks its 17th edition. We chose Madya Stadium in Medan because it meets international Class 1 standards, making it suitable for major events, even equivalent to the Olympics," said PB PASI Secretary General, Tigor Tanjung, in a written statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, as quoted by antaranews.com.
He revealed that Indonesia previously hosted the same championship in 2011. This year, PB PASI aims to use it as a stepping stone to enhance Indonesia's presence on the Asian athletics map.
Tigor also expressed hope that Indonesia can bid to host the Asian U18 Championship in 2027, which would be attended by 45 member countries.
PB PASI received full support from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ario Bimo Nandito "Dito" Ariotedjo after an audience at the Ministry of Youth and Sports office last Tuesday, July 29, 2025. According to the Minister, this event can be an important moment to gauge the capabilities of young Indonesian athletes while also showcasing the readiness of national sports infrastructure.
“This is excellent, not only for utilizing international-standard venues, but also as an opportunity to measure the readiness of our young athletes at the regional level,” said Minister Dito.
Regarding the plan to bid for the Asian U-18 Championship in 2027, the Minister expressed full support.
“I support Indonesia in bidding for the Asian U-18 Championship in 2027. This is important so that we are increasingly recognized on the Asian athletics map,” he emphasized.
PB PASI expressed hope that government support can strengthen Indonesia's efforts to become one of the development centers for young athletes in Southeast Asia and Asia. ***
