KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesian climber Putri Handayani made a proud achievement after successfully setting foot on the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, during a climb that took place from January 4 to 9, 2025.
After three days of waiting for the fog to clear at Antarctica's Union Glacier Camp, Putri finally flew to Vinson Base Camp (2,152 meters above sea level) on January 4, 2025.
From there, Putri and her team began their climb across the Branscomb Glacier to Camp 1, also known as Low Camp (2,865 meters above sea level), rri.co.id reported.
The combination of a scorching sun and frigid temperatures, reaching minus 6 degrees Celsius, presented a significant challenge. After a day of rest, Putri continued the climb to Camp 2, or High Camp (3,858 meters above sea level).
Taking advantage of the continued sunny weather that week, Putri and her team decided to make a summit push the following day. In extreme temperatures that plummeted to minus 35 degrees Celsius, Putri maintained her focus and physical condition, ultimately reaching the summit.
At the top of Mount Vinson, Putri proudly raised the Red and White flag, a symbol of Indonesian pride. “This is not just about climbing, but also about proving that Indonesian women are capable of facing big challenges, in any field,” said Putri.
Mount Vinson, located at 4,892 meters above sea level, is recognized as one of the greatest challenges for climbers worldwide. Its proximity to the South Pole results in lower air pressure, making the climb really challenging.
Located on the coldest continent in the world, Mount Vinson poses unpredictable weather and is difficult to reach. This makes it one of the toughest peaks in the Seven Summits list.
Putri Handayani's success is not only a source of personal pride but also an inspiration for all Indonesians, especially women aspiring to achieve ambitious goals.
“I dedicate this climb to Indonesia, and to all women who believe that big dreams can be achieved with determination and effort,” she added.
This climbing expedition received a direct support from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as well as two state-owned companies, PT Pertamina and PT Garuda Indonesia.
Putri Handayani's climb is expected to inspire young Indonesians to pursue further achievements internationally. Through hard work, dedication, and a strong fighting spirit, she has proven that limits exist only in our minds. ***
