The 81st TNI Anniversary, Here’s the Theme and History

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Military (TNI) marks its 81st anniversary on Monday, October 5, 2026. This year’s anniversary carries the theme “A Strong TNI Together with the People, a Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”

According to the official TNI website, the theme emphasizes the importance of unity and close ties between the TNI and the public in carrying out its duty to safeguard Indonesia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The 81st TNI anniversary also serves as a momentum to strengthen the military’s dedication to the nation and state. The spirit is in line with the TNI PRIMA concept, which stands for Professional, Responsive, Integrative, Modern, and Adaptive in developing Indonesia’s defense capabilities.

The history of the TNI is closely linked to the formation of Indonesia’s defense forces following independence. After the Proclamation of Independence on August 17, 1945, the government needed an organization capable of maintaining security and defending the country’s newly gained independence.

The People’s Security Agency (BKR) was established in August 1945 as part of the early process of forming Indonesia’s national defense forces. The BKR later developed into the People’s Security Army, or TKR, on October 5, 1945, which became the basis for establishing October 5 as TNI Day.

The development of Indonesia’s defense organization continued with the establishment of the Indonesian Republic Army (TRI). On June 3, 1947, President Soekarno officially established the name Indonesian National Defense Forces, or TNI, following the integration of the TRI with various armed civilian militias and resistance groups.

The 81st TNI anniversary serves as a momentum to reaffirm the TNI’s role in safeguarding Indonesia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The commemoration also reinforces its commitment to professionalism, modernization of defense capabilities, and continued service to the nation and state.
