Nezar: Aceh Can Be Malacca Strait Digital Hub

Banda Aceh – Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria is encouraging Aceh to leverage its geographic position at the edge of the Malacca Strait as a strategic opportunity to build the region's technological and digital economic capacity. He made the remarks during a discussion titled "Aceh, the Malacca Strait, and the Future of Indonesia's Digital Landscape" in Banda Aceh, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs received on Monday, September 7, 2026.

According to Nezar, the Malacca Strait is not only significant as a global trade route, but is also part of the global digital infrastructure network through undersea communication cables connecting various countries. "The subsea cable that carries the internet we use today runs beneath the Malacca Strait," he said.

However, Nezar stressed that a strategic geographic position does not automatically translate into economic benefit. He said the main challenge going forward is not simply providing digital connectivity, but ensuring that the people of Aceh have the capacity to master technology and put it to use for economic needs, governance, and society at large. "What matters is no longer treating the Malacca Strait as a geographic gift. The question is how we create value from it," he asserted.

Nezar also pointed out that the main gateway points for undersea cables are currently concentrated in Singapore, even though the cable routes pass through Indonesian territory. He said this situation should prompt reflection on opportunities to develop infrastructure and a digital ecosystem around this strategic corridor.

Nezar noted that Aceh already has the foundational assets to seize this opportunity, including universities, tech communities, young talent, and a geographic position directly facing international trade and connectivity routes. For that reason, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has made talent development and technology-based entrepreneurship part of its strategy for building a digital ecosystem in the region, including through the Garuda Spark Innovation Hub in Banda Aceh, which gives local talent access to mentoring, business networking, product development, and opportunities to meet investors.

Nezar further said technology does not always have to come in the form of complex innovation. It can create value when used to solve concrete problems in sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, trade, and government services. He said this approach is important for Aceh so that its existing resources can generate higher economic value.

Nezar expressed hope that Aceh's younger generation would see their region's geographic position as an opportunity to build the future. He said mastery of technology, the ability to create products, and connection to the global ecosystem are key assets for turning Aceh's strategic position into economic benefit for its people.
