Husein Sastranegara Airport Reopened After Temporary Volcanic Ash Shutdown

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung – Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, has reopened after temporarily closing due to the spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

State-owned airport operator InJourney Airports Corporate Secretary Group Head Arie Ahsanurrohim said the airport’s reopening followed the completion of procedures to clear volcanic ash from all airside areas, including the apron, taxiways, and runway.

“Husein Sastranegara Airport reopened on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 00:42 a.m. local time,” Arie said in a statement received in Bandung on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara.

He added that airport management also conducted friction tests on the runway to ensure the surface met aviation safety standards and requirements. The test results confirmed that both airside and landside facilities at Husein Sastranegara Airport met the necessary standards for flight operations.

“Friction tests were also carried out on the runway, showing that the facility met the standards and requirements for flight operations,” Arie said.

Arie urged prospective passengers to monitor and verify their flight status and schedule through their airline’s official channels before heading to the airport.

Earlier, Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said some passengers affected by the airport’s closure had switched to rail transportation, including the Whoosh high‑speed train.

“Thankfully, everything is running smoothly for those traveling east or west, whether from Jakarta or Bandung. Train travel is safe,” Farhan said.

He noted that volcanic ash was no longer found on the surface of the airport’s runway. However, ash in the air had prevented flights from resuming at that time. “It cannot be confirmed yet, but airlines are already providing special services for passengers wishing to reschedule or request a refund,” Farhan said. ***
