NTT Earthquake Survivor Gets Starlink

RRI.CO.ID, Maumere - The survivors of earthquake in Sukun Island, East Nusa Tenggara got Starlink from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Handed over on Sunday, August 23, 2026, the satellite-based device will help open communication network in the region.

As quoted from BNPB press release, communication was difficult due to lack of signal. Survivors went to higher land to get signal and contact family or everyone outside the island.

Now with the Starlink, the communication was expected to be more stable. While coordination, information dissemination, and needs identification will be smoother among the people, local government, health worker, and emergency response workers.

The Starlink device was one of some assistance provided by the government. The BNPB also sent medical packages and medicines via National Assistance Posts in Maumere.

"We also brought medicines from the Sikka Health Agency for the affected areas," BNPB's Director for Emergency Response in Region III, Nelwan said. The aid was given for around 300 families who were affected by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

Earlier, agency and local government had distributed logistics and equipment on Friday, August 21, 2026. This was to fulfill people's basic needs despite the geographic challenges.

Sukun Island became one of the agency's commitment in earthquake emergency responses. The island is separated far from the Flores mainland and the closest access point was Maumere.
